This was one of the portraits painted in Washington, DC as part of the re-entry program for Free Minds Book Club and Writing Workshop, a local non-profit helping young men involved with the justice system. Clayton was 19 years old and as he modeled to “Smooth Jazz” on my phone on Pandora, he expressed the revelation that music could affect his mood. He said he wakes up in a good mood, then puts on his rap music which he relates to, but which then takes that good feeling away.
