This is a portrait of my two sons, Aihan and Martin, backpack camping on vacation in the Sierra Nevada high country. I lived twenty winters there at 7000’ in the mountains, although not quite as many summers after I started coming to Alaska. I’ve always loved camping, backpacking, and especially sleeping on the ground under the stars, which I used to do all summer there, choosing my sleeping bag over my bed. To me this image captured the essence of my children, back when they loved camping and hiking as much as their dad and I did.
